CONTRACT RATE

Earn while you learn! Chelan PUD pays $13.92 - $15.73 per hour (based on education, skills and abilities).

JOB DURATION

Chelan PUD has great opportunities for students pursuing communications careers.

Students in these positions work full-time during the summer (Monday - Friday; typically, 8:00 am - 5:00 pm) and may also work, if available, during winter and spring academic years (for one or two years, depending on need, budget and performance).

JOB POSTING

JOB PURPOSE:
Gain significant real-world experience with a wide range of hands-on communication roles in a dynamic organization that is focused on positive customer interaction and engagement.  Candidates will improve and enhance their research, story writing and communication skills.  Requires demonstrated experience writing articles, taking pictures and capturing moving images on film, video or other media that will be used in creating imagery and content for internal and external PUD Web sites, publications, online streaming and broadcasting using a variety of traditional and digital platforms.  Provide support for general Communications tasks including responding to phone inquiries, writing news releases, proofreading and helping with special events.

Student work schedules are limited to a maximum of 20 hours per week during the academic year, except during academic school breaks.  Students may work up to 40 hours per week during spring, winter, and summer academic school breaks.  Student employment may not exceed two years from the date of hire.

JOB FUNCTIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function of the job satisfactorily.  Essential functions (EF) are those activities that, if not performed, would significantly and fundamentally alter the position.  Secondary functions (SF) are activities not fundamental to the job and may need to be relaxed to accommodate an otherwise qualified applicant with a disability.  In the aggregate, secondary functions typically account for less than 15% of the job scope.

1. EF 10 % Edit and archive digital still, video and audio files.

2. EF 10% Receive and respond to telephone and online requests for information as directed by Communication departmental staff.

3. EF 10% Take digital photographs and video as directed by Communications division members.

4. EF 50% Research and write content for publications and news releases as directed by Communications staff including taking digital still photos and/or video for illustration.

5. EF 10% Post to District social media sites using established protocols and under the direction of the Communication staff.

6. EF 10% Provide support for special events as directed by Communications staff.

7. EF Ongoing Must immediately inform supervisor if student enrollment status changes and the employee no longer meets student eligibility guidelines.  

8. EF Ongoing Drive a motor vehicle while conducting business on behalf of the District. Note: Students under 18 may not drive more than 20% of any work week.

9. EF Ongoing Maintain regular and predictable attendance.  Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.  Complete all required training. Comply with District policies. Maintain a working knowledge and comply with District safety procedures and specific safety requirements of this position, and those in accordance with applicable provisions of the Revised Code of Washington (RCW) and Washington Administrative Code (WAC).

QUALIFICATIONS: The qualifications listed below are representative of those required, but reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of the job. 

Education:
Requires a high school diploma or general education degree (GED), or current participation in a Running Start Program and in senior year of high school curriculum (including home-based education).  Must be at least 18 years of age at time of hire.  Must have completed one year of college courses relating to communications, journalism, marketing, advertising or public relations.  Must be currently enrolled in a bona fide education program (in an accredited college or university) with valid documentation presented at hire and subsequent quarter/semester enrollments.  Must be earning a minimum of 10 credits for each applicable quarter/semester and must maintain a minimum overall grade point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale.  Declaration of a major in communications, journalism and/or public relations and demonstrated proficiency in writing and copyediting is preferred.

Experience:
Typically requires two (2) years of community volunteer or customer service experience, or the equivalent combination of education, work experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Specific KSA's: A fully skilled incumbent will have the following specific knowledge, skills, and abilities:
Requires excellent communications skills, written and oral, developed through work or educational experience including good grammar and spelling.

Language Skills:
Must be proficient in reading, writing and speaking English. Bilingual fluency in English and Spanish is preferred. Candidates who meet this preference qualification as well as the remaining qualifications, will be included in the initial pool of applicants and provided an opportunity for an interview.  

Computers & Equipment: A fully skilled incumbent will have the ability to use the following software, hardware, or equipment:
To perform this job successfully, an individual should have basic knowledge of Microsoft Outlook; Content Management Systems; Microsoft Excel spreadsheet software; Microsoft PowerPoint  Presentation software; social media sites; and Adobe Photoshop and/or other digital image management systems.  An individual should also have a strong working knowledge of Internet Explorer Internet software; and Microsoft Word and Word Processing software.  The incumbent will be required to be able to operate computers, printers, scanners, digital still and video cameras, faxes, phones and copy machines.

The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl or twist torso and pull, push, or exert force.  The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision and depth perception.

LICENSE REQUIREMENTS

A valid driver's license is required for this position (verified upon hire).  A valid Washington State driver's license is required within 30 days of employment.

Students under the age of 18 must comply with State of Washington Department of Labor and Industries Employment Standards (Driving by Minors – RCW 49.12 Administrative Policy ES.C.4.3), WAC 296-125-030, and Washington State Department of Licensing intermediate license laws for teen drivers when driving while conducting business on behalf of the District.
