CONTRACT RATE

Earn while you learn! Chelan PUD pays $13.12 - $14.83 per hour (depending on knowledge, skills and abilities).

JOB DURATION

This is a three-month student position that begins during spring break in late March and ends in early June.

We'll work around school schedules, but the best person for the position will be available at least two full days (during the week of Monday - Friday) beginning at 7:00 am.

JOB POSTING

JOB PURPOSE:
This temporary student position provides support in conducting Fish and Wildlife department field work and provides work experience for students currently enrolled in the Natural Resource Program at Wenatchee Valley College (WVC).  Candidates must be enrolled in NATR 196 or AGRI 296 courses during the spring 2019 quarter. 

The employee will assist Fish and Wildlife personnel with data collection associated with compliance projects as well as wildlife monitoring and habitat management associated with Chelan PUD-owned wildlife parcels (habitat restoration and monitoring). 

The regular schedule for this position is two or three eight (8) hour days per week.  The position requires 2-3 full days of field work during the spring quarter, beginning during the WVC spring break in late March – and ending in early June.  The term of employment for this position will be consistent with and limited to the WVC spring term.

Student work schedules are limited to a maximum of 20 hours per week during the academic year, except during academic school breaks.  Students may work up to 40 hours per week during spring, winter, and summer academic school breaks. Student employment may not exceed two years from the date of hire. 

JOB FUNCTIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function of the job satisfactorily.  Essential functions (EF) are those activities that, if not performed, would significantly and fundamentally alter the position.  Secondary functions (SF) are activities not fundamental to the job and may need to be relaxed to accommodate an otherwise qualified applicant with a disability.  In the aggregate, secondary functions typically account for less than 15% of the job scope.

1. EF 60% Wildlife monitoring –Locate and identify wildlife and habitat by boat or on foot.  Must legibly record accurate wildlife observation information on data forms.

2. EF 20% Habitat restoration and monitoring - Perform habitat restoration and monitoring activities on foot over steep and uneven terrain.  Plant identification, data collection or habitat characteristics.  Install nest boxes.

3. EF 10% Data entry/management – Accurately enter wildlife or habitat data collected into computer.

4. SF 10% Fisheries support – Assist with fish studies including activities such as bypass sampling, survival studies, or predator monitoring.

5. EF Ongoing Must immediately inform supervisor if student enrollment status changes and the employee no longer meet student eligibility guidelines.

6. EF Ongoing Maintain regular and predictable attendance.  Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.  Comply with District policies. Complete all required training. Maintain a working knowledge and comply with District safety procedures and specific safety requirements of this position, and those in accordance with applicable provisions of the Revised Code of Washington (RCW) and Washington Administrative Code (WAC).

QUALIFICATIONS: The qualifications listed below are representative of those required, but reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of the job. 

Education:
Requires a high school diploma or general education degree (GED), or current participation in a Running Start Program and in senior year of high school curriculum (including home-based education).   Must be enrolled in the Wenatchee Valley College Natural Resources Certificate Program during Spring 2018 quarter and in either of the following Cooperative Work Experience classes:  NATR 196 or AGRI 296.  Must be at least 17 years of age at time of hire.  Must be currently enrolled in a bona fide education program (in an accredited college or university) with valid documentation presented at hire and subsequent quarter/semester enrollments.   Must be earning a minimum of 10 credits for each applicable quarter/semester and must maintain a minimum overall grade point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale.

Experience:
Previous experience (volunteer or paid) related to wildlife or habitat work and experience with boats (outboard boats and canoes) is preferred, but not required. 

Specific KSA's: 
A fully skilled incumbent will have the following specific knowledge, skills, and abilities:
Ability to use binoculars to locate and identify wildlife.   Ability to operate outboard boats and canoes. Knowledge of local bird and mammal wildlife species.  Must be able to hike with a backpack over steep and uneven terrain.  Must have the ability to record data accurately.

Language Skills:
Candidate must be proficient in reading, writing and speaking English.

Computers & Equipment:
A fully skilled incumbent will have the ability to utilize the following software, hardware, or equipment: Microsoft Outlook, Excel and Word (Microsoft Office software applications).  Must be able to operate hand tools, ladders and boats.

Must meet the District’s qualifications for Student employment at all times.  Students will be terminated when no longer enrolled in a bona fide education program, including immediately upon graduation.

LICENSE REQUIREMENTS

A valid driver's license is required for this position (verified upon hire).  A valid Washington State driver's license is required within 30 days of employment.

Students under the age of 18 must comply with State of Washington Department of Labor and Industries Employment Standards (Driving by Minors – RCW 49.12 Administrative Policy ES.C.4.3), WAC 296-125-030, and Washington State Department of Licensing intermediate license laws for teen drivers when driving while conducting business on behalf of the District.
