June 2023 - Work is underway on River Road Fire Safety Improvements

WHEN & WHAT TO EXPECT:

• For various operational reasons, the project will now be constructed in three sections.
• We began construction on the first third of the project – from the railroad tracks, down River Rd. approx. 1,700 feet - in late June.
• The second and third sections of the project will be constructed in 2024 and 2025. 

WHEN & WHAT TO EXPECT:

• Work on the first third of the project began in late June and is expected to finish by the end of August.
• A PUD contractor is installing underground conduit and electrical equipment (duct and vault).
• We expect some traffic impacts. Please watch for flaggers and signage.
• Working hours are generally Monday – Friday, 7 a.m. – 4 p.m.
• Power outages may be needed. Affected customers will be notified prior to any outages.
• PUD crews will come back later this year to pull wire through the conduit.

Project Background

Chelan PUD identified the overhead utilities along this section of River Road as a candidate for undergrounding because it meets several criteria for fire risk and constructability. This project will help reduce the risk of wildfire ignition during extreme weather conditions.

This project is part of a larger plan to reduce fire risk in the most vulnerable areas of the county. That plan includes equipment upgrades and pruning trees and shrubs away from lines.

The PUD hosted a Neighborhood Meeting on June 11, 2022 in Plain to inform stakeholders about the project and discuss potential impacts to properties.
