Solar Power

Solar energy is a clean, renewable, and abundant resource—especially here in Chelan County. If you’re thinking about installing a solar power system, we’re here to help.

Thinking About Solar? Start Here.

Before signing a contract, take these important steps:

  1. Evaluate your home's solar potential.
Use Google Project Sunroof to estimate how much sunlight your roof receives each year.

  2. Consider potential costs versus savings.
Chelan PUD’s ultra-low electric rates mean that a solar system likely will not pay for itself from a financial perspective. Watch the Solar Economics in Chelan County video below to learn more.

  3. Get multiple quotes.
Request bids from at least three licensed solar installers to ensure you're getting a fair price.

  4. Review consumer protections.
Check the Washington Solar Consumer Protection Act Checklist for important guidelines before committing.

       5. Fill out the Renewable Energy Generation Service Application and Contract.

Is Solar a Good Investment in Chelan County?

In Chelan County, installing solar power generally only makes financial sense if you're building an off-grid home located far from existing power lines and have good solar exposure.

For homes already connected to the grid—or those that can easily be connected—solar isn’t usually cost-effective. Chelan PUD offers some of the lowest electricity rates in the country, so most residents won’t recoup the upfront costs of solar installation through energy savings.

However, some homeowners choose solar for reasons beyond financial return, such as meeting building code requirements, reducing carbon emissions, increasing energy independence, or supporting renewable energy. If those goals matter to you, solar could still be a worthwhile investment. Learn more in our short explainer video¡Mira el video en español!
