Hot Water Savings

Hot water uses about 20% of the average Chelan County home's electricity. It's the second biggest energy user at home, after space heating. Check out these easy ways to use less, saving money on your water and electricity bills.

1. Take Shorter and Fewer Showers

Shorten your shower time or take one less frequently, and you'll save money heating less hot water. (Plus, dermatologists say it's better for your skin. Who knew?!)

Take Showers Instead of Baths

Showers use about 10 to 25 gallons of water, while a full bath uses often 70 gallons or more!

2. Go Low Flow

Use faucet aerators and low-flow showerheads to save hot water and money to heat it. (Bonus for a dual-flush toilet to save water. #DesertLiving) Aerators make water feel smoother, and low-flow showerheads can boost your shower pressure. Older low-flow showerheads get a bad rap, but new models work much better!

3. Wash In Cold Water and Only Full Loads

Modern detergents are designed to clean clothes in cold water. Check out your detergent label, and whenever possible skip the hot water. And make sure to wash full loads of clothes.

4. Use a Dishwasher (and Don't Pre-Rinse)

Only run full loads in your dishwasher. Anything less still uses almost the same amount of water and energy. And skip the pre-rinse, too! Modern detergents clean best by sticking to food residues.

5. Insulate Your Tank

If your water heater is an unheated space, insulate it with a water heater blanket (reduces heat loss by up to 45%). Also make sure to install a foam pad underneath (required by WA State energy code when you replace your water heater).

6. Add Pipe Insulation

Insulating your hot water pipes running from your water heater means hot water reaches your faucet faster and your water heater won't have to work as hard to keep its water warm. All this saves you money on your electric bills (and on water!).

7. Set Your Tank to 120°F

Hotter temperatures on your water heater can lead to scalding, and lower temperatures invite bacteria to grow. Set your water heater to 120°F (or the manufacturer recommended setting) and turn it off at the breaker when you leave town.

8. Switch to a Heat Pump Water Heater

Heat pump water heaters use up to 70% less energy than a standard electric model. Plus, you can get $1,300 in Chelan PUD rebates. They're a fantastic energy-saving technology — in the right location. Learn more about the best placement in these videos.

9. Use Water Heater Controls

Especially if you're away from home often, invest in Wi-Fi controls for your water heater. That way you can turn it off when you leave town and back on before you're home. It's an easy way to save money!
