July 20: Bring your ideas for improvements to the Wenatchee Riverfront Park

by Rachel Hansen | Jul 09, 2021

Have you ever strolled or pedaled through the Wenatchee Riverfront Park and thought of ways to improve the space? Over the next few months, you will get a chance to weigh in with ideas.

On July 20, the City of Wenatchee and Chelan PUD will host an open house at the Localtel Event Center at Pybus Marketplace to support the creation of a master plan for the park. The public is invited to bring their comments, questions, and ideas for potential improvements to this popular community resource. A second public event will occur in late-summer or early-fall.

Refreshments will be served throughout the day at three open house sessions: 8-10 a.m., 12-2 p.m. and 4-7 p.m. Native Spanish speakers will also be on hand.

For those individuals unable to join in person, an opportunity to review materials and submit comments will be available online at the project website beginning on July 20.

The City of Wenatchee and Chelan PUD are collaborating to commit resources to support the first phase of improvements to the Riverfront Park. They have engaged with landscape architecture and design firm Greenworks to develop a master plan for the park’s 31 acres. The planning process is scheduled to be completed by the end of this year, with implementation of the plan to begin in 2022.

Possible improvements may include landscaping, water features, improved public gathering spaces, enhancements to trails and sidewalks, play areas, wayfinding and lighting, parking, improved river viewpoints and similar active and passive recreational amenities.

Wenatchee Riverfront Park is generally defined as the area along the Columbia River from 9th Street south to Thurston Street. A majority of the land in the park is owned by the City of Wenatchee and has been leased to the PUD since 1983 to support park development as part of the PUD’s responsibilities under its federal license for Rock Island Dam.
