We’re all connected by water. The Chelan PUD wastewater facilities work hard every day to ensure that water returns safely to our environment, but we need your help to keep our water clean and safe for everyone.
Why Does This Matter?
Certain substances in wastewater, such as phosphorus and other pollutants, can affect water quality and the natural balance of our local ecosystems. By reducing these substances, we can help protect our water resources for the long term.
Here’s How You Can Help:
You play a key role in keeping our water system healthy by avoiding the following:
-
Grease: Don’t pour fats, oil or grease (FOG) down the drain. Let it cool and trash it—this prevents clogs and backups.
How to Prevent F.O.G. Pollution
- Phosphorus: Choose phosphorus-free soaps, detergents, and fertilizers to protect water quality and prevent algae blooms.

- Medications: Never flush unused medications. Drop them off at a collection site.

- Hazardous Waste & Toxins: Never pour cleaning products, paint, solvents, or pesticides down the drain. These items can damage plumbing and contaminate water supplies. Instead, dispose of them at an approved hazardous waste site.
Household Hazardous Waste Recycling & Disposal
Household Hazardous Waste
By properly disposing of harmful materials, you help protect water quality, wildlife, and public health.
Lake Wenatchee and Peshastin wastewater systems rely on septic systems. Flushing the wrong items can cause costly damage and pollute our local water sources.
In addition to the items listed above, please remember: only flush toilet paper—nothing else. Every small action helps protect your septic system and our environment.
Do NOT flush:
• "Flushable" wipes (they’re not!)
• Paper towels or napkins
• Facial tissues
• Feminine hygiene products
• Diapers
• Hair
• Any other trash
Protect your septic system and our environment—when in doubt, throw it out!
