WENATCHEE – Long weekends are prime time for scammers, and Chelan PUD is urging customers to stay alert before heading into the Fourth of July holiday. Scammers often strike when people are busy, traveling or distracted.
Chelan PUD has received recent reports of scam and fraud attempts from bad actors claiming to be associated with the utility.
Customers should:
- Hang up on anyone demanding immediate payment or asking for credit card information.
- Check your bank account regularly for suspicious activity.
Customers have reported two types of scam attempts in recent weeks.
Some customers have reported unauthorized bank account transactions labeled “Chelan County PU.” Chelan PUD does not withdraw funds from bank accounts without an associated utility bill. Reported transactions from “Chelan County PU” are not connected to Chelan PUD billing systems. If you see a suspicious transaction labeled “Chelan County PU,” contact your bank immediately.
Chelan PUD has also received reports of scam phone calls from people claiming there is a problem with a customer’s autopay account. In those calls, scammers asked customers to provide credit card information over the phone to “verify” payment information. Chelan PUD will not demand immediate payment over the phone.
If you receive a suspicious call, hang up and call Chelan PUD directly at (509) 661-8002. Customer service is available by phone from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays, not including holidays (Offices are closed this Friday, July 3). Customers can also view bills and payment options anytime at www.chelanpud.org/bill.
