The powerhouse for the Lake Chelan Hydroelectric Project houses two generators with a nameplate generating capacity of 48 MW. The first power was produced in 1927.
Ownership of three hydroelectric projects provides Chelan County PUD with the ability to generate clean, renewable hydropower for generations to come.
More than a half-century ago, public power leaders saw the opportunities inherent in local control of the powerful resource. They also took on the responsiblity of stewardship for the waters that nurture Chelan County's fish, wildlife and natural beauty.
Two of the District's hydro projects, Rocky Reach and Rock Island, are part of an 11-dam network on the U.S. portion of the Columbia River. The Columbia, with headwaters in Canada, is fueled by the fourth-largest drainage system in North America.
The District's third hydro project, Lake Chelan, empties into the Columbia River and serves multiple purposes including generating power, regulating the level of 50-mile-long Lake Chelan and enhancing recreation on what is the third-deepest body of fresh water in North America.
Chelan County PUD delivers reliable, affordable electricity to 43,000 local customers. The electric system includes 1,950 miles of distribution line, 36 substations and seven switchyards.
The PUD also provides advanced broadband wholesale fiber optic network to homes, businesses, schools, hospitals and government offices. The District is constructing and maintaining the network and retail service providers are offering residents an affordable choice for high-speed Internet, television and telephone over the network.
PUD water systems deliver drinking water to more than 5,000 local customers.
The PUD owns and operates three rural wastewater systems serving about 450 homes and businesses.
Lush, green and clean is what visitors say after they have experienced the beauty of Chelan County PUD's 14 parks. Developed over a 17-year period by the PUD under the requirements of federal licenses to operate the hyrdoelectric projects, the parks offer opportunities that range from full hook-up camping at 56-acre Beebe Bridge Park to a quiet walk along the riverfront in Wenatchee or Chelan.
More than 3 million people visit the parks each year.
