Chelan PUD customers are seeing an impact on their electric bills due to the coldest billing cycle on record. From last December through this month the average daily temperature was 4 degrees below average.
The cold snap has continued into January. Customers are likely to see higher power use reflected on their next power bill, too.
“We’re hearing from customers concerned about higher-than-usual electric bills,” said Kerri Wendell, Customer Relations manager. “In responding, we found that the prolonged cold snap is the single most significant factor.”
Last month’s plunge in temperatures followed the warmest November on record, Wendell said. The December 2016 average low temperature was 18 degrees F. In December 2015, the average low was 33 degrees F.
Chelan PUD has payment options to help customers manage high bills, she said. “If customers are having difficulty paying their power bills, we urge them to talk with us soon,” Wendell said. “We also have Customer Relations staff members who can help Spanish-speaking customers.”

Customers can stay comfortable and use less power by:
- Setting programmable thermostats to lower temperatures while at work or sleeping; 10 degrees lower than daytime for an electric furnace and 4-5 degrees lower if you have a heat pump. Lowering your thermostat setting by 1 degree can reduce power bills by up to 2 percent
