Chelan County PUD
Chelan County PUD has learned that normal spring river management above Rocky Reach Dam will mean a drop in river flows starting today and lasting through the weekend. The lower flows will mean that Columbia River levels during certain times of the day – primarily late evening and early morning – will be lower.
In order to ensure that river recreationists aren’t stranded, the PUD may close two of the three public boat launches on the Rock Island Reservoir with four hours notice. Affected by the potential closure are Kirby Billingsley Hydro Park boat launch on the Douglas County side of the river and Wenatchee Riverfront Park boat launch at the foot of Orondo Avenue by Pybus Public Market in Chelan County. There will be signs and barricades at the launches to warn boaters.
Wenatchee Confluence State Park boat launch at 333 Olds Station Road, just north of Wenatchee, will remain open. Recreationists using the boat launch and boat launch parking area will not be charged a fee for the launching and tow vehicle.
This weekend is the annual Pikeminnow Derby on the Rock Island Reservoir. The PUD wants participants to have fun and be safe. River flows will be monitored throughout the weekend to determine if the launches will remain open. Recreationists can call (509) 661-8000 and press “6” for boat launch closure updates. Also, real-time river level and river flow information is available at http://www.chelanpud.org by clicking on “target=_blank>Wanapum Drawdown” in the upper right hand corner of the home page. River information is located on the right side of the page.
Chelan PUD cautions boaters to be very aware of the possibility for river levels that can change quickly. Signs are posted at all boat launches.
This temporary adjustment isn’t expected to affect irrigators. If the situation changes during the weekend, the PUD will update the hotline and website with that information.
