Chelan County PUD

Chelan County Public Utility District was formed in 1936 by local voters who wanted affordable power for all county residents. We delivered our first electricity 11 years later, to a small group of customers near Lake Chelan. Today, we operate three hydro projects that deliver clean, renewable, low-cost energy to local residents and to other utilities that serve millions of residents of the Pacific Northwest.

Jean Ludwick was the first women in Washington State elected to a public utility district commission. She served as a Chelan PUD commissioner 1978-1990, including three terms as board president.

“She was bold. She asked a lot of questions. She took her work as a commissioner very seriously,” Peggy Ludwick said of her late mother. Jean passed away in 2013.

During her tenure, Chelan PUD built many of its parks along the Columbia River to enhance quality of life for customer-owners in Chelan County.

“Her name is on many of the bronze plaques in Chelan PUD’s parks, and I love taking my grandchildren to visit,” Peggy said. “Helping carry out the PUD’s mission and provide access for communities to enjoy our beautiful waterways – that meant a lot to her,” Peggy said.
