Chelan County PUD

Chelan County Public Utility District was formed in 1936 by local voters who wanted affordable power for all county residents. We delivered our first electricity 11 years later, to a small group of customers near Lake Chelan. Today, we operate three hydro projects that deliver clean, renewable, low-cost energy to local residents and to other utilities that serve millions of residents of the Pacific Northwest.

Calling all poets in grades 1-6

by Rachel Hansen | May 05, 2021
Help celebrate the Columbia River and the all-new Rocky Reach Discovery Center on Aug. 28.

What inspires you about the Columbia River? Students currently in grades 1-6 are invited to write a poem about the mighty river as part of the reopening celebration for the completely renovated Discovery Center at Rocky Reach Dam.

The wait is almost over to see the transformation of one of the region’s most popular attractions. Visitors will find a whole new way to experience the Columbia River.

The first renovations since the building opened in the 1960s have created about 30 percent more display space in the same footprint, and features all-new innovative and hands-on displays.

Discovery Center staff can’t wait to welcome you back!

Awarding poetry prizes in three categories will be part of the fun at the reopening celebration on Aug. 28, 2021. Rocky Reach Park will be open, too, with its lush gardens and popular playground.

The celebration will feature Discovery Center tours, entertainment in the park and treats! It’s open to all and free – one of those great benefits of public power.

Numerica Credit Union is joining the Discovery Center celebration by supporting poetry contest prizes in three divisions for grades:

  • 1st-2nd
  • 3rd-4th
  • 5th-6th

The theme of the poem is: “Why I like the Columbia River.” Handwritten entries of 20 to 250 words must be mailed by June 30 to:

Chelan County PUD
Attn: Debbie Gallaher
PO Box 1231
Wenatchee WA 98807

See entry details at on the PUD’s website

Stay tuned for details on how to safely visit and celebrate on Aug. 28, 2021, coming on  facebook.com/VisitRockyReach and in radio updates from Discovery Center mascot Rocky, a teenage bighorn sheep. As Rocky says, “it’s gonna be epic!”
