PUD water systems serve a growing population which requires new services and infrastructure, such as the 1-million-gallon reservoir at center left in photo.
Providing reliable, affordable utilities to Chelan County's rural homes and businesses is at the heart of Chelan County PUD. Founded in 1936 to deliver affordable electricity, the PUD moved into other utilities as needs were identified. Private business can not always be relied on to serve rural areas where low population density makes utility systems expensive to build and monetary returns low. Filling the service gap has helped Chelan County grow and prosper.
The PUD now operates five water systems serving more than 5,000 customers. Diverse terrain, low population density and strict regulations make the rural water systems challenging to operate.
The PUD encourages conservation including the use of Xeriscape landscaping. Utility rates are also designed to encourage conservation; as use increases, so do the rates.
