CONTRACT RATE

Earn while you learn! Chelan PUD pays $15.11 - $16.51 per hour (based on education, skills and abilities) for students pursuing engineering degrees.

JOB DURATION

Students in these positions work full-time during the summer (Monday - Friday; typically 8:00 am - 5:00 pm) and may also work, if available, during winter and spring academic breaks (for up to two years, depending on need, budget and performance).

JOB POSTING

JOB PURPOSE:
Engineering students have the opportunity to earn while they learn firsthand about the duties and responsibilities of engineers in an electric utility environment. Learning takes place in a supervised environment and assignments include the following work areas:

Engineering & Project Management:  Entry level investigation, analysis, design, procurement and construction inspection in the disciplines of electrical, mechanical and civil engineering.   Works under direction of engineers at Rocky Reach and Rock Island Hydro facilities. Gains exposure to engineered facilities and equipment as related to their engineering discipline such as: water conveyance, building structures, earthwork, paving, turbines, generators, spillway gates, transformers, batteries, electrical controls and fire protection. (Employee IS required to drive a motorized vehicle while conducting business on behalf of the District; therefore, a valid Driver's License is required at time of application.) Focus in electrical, mechanical or civil engineering.

Transmission & Compliance: Assists transmission engineers with circuit design, drafting, updating system data documents with equipment ratings and photos, and assist with various other entry level engineering related tasks. Gains exposure to power system operations, controls and design.  (Employee IS required to drive a motorized vehicle while conducting business on behalf of the District; therefore, a valid Driver's License is required at time of application. Pursuant to the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) standards, Chelan County Public Utility District #1 conducts background screening of personnel who have access to the District's critical physical and/or cyber assets.)  Focus in electrical engineering.

Energy Conservation:   Students are introduced to the field of energy management to improve the energy efficiency of residential, commercial and industrial facilities and equipment.  The engineering student intern supports the energy efficiency department’s goal of identifying energy efficiency opportunities, determine their cost effectiveness, helping customers achieve those savings and documenting their actual savings.  Student interns may also help the District evaluate various electric vehicle charging systems and programs. Focus in electrical or mechanic engineering.

Hydro Engineering: Assists and supports plant engineers in their daily work, supports preparation of documentation for reliability compliance activities and prepares test procedures for electrical protection systems. Assists with control and protection upgrade projects at Rocky Reach and Rock Island. (Employee IS required to drive a motorized vehicle while conducting business on behalf of the District; therefore, a valid Driver's License is required at time of application.)  Focus in electrical engineering or Engineering Technology.

Control Systems: Support Control Systems Engineering activities in a learning environment. Will work under the direction of the Control Systems Engineering Manager and Control Systems Engineers working at the Confluence Technology Center.  Assist and support systems that perform Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) at System Operations, Hydro Operations, Hatchery, and Water/Wastewater facilities. Prepare documentation for reliability compliance activities. Support development of the asset management program.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
Requires a high school diploma or general education degree (GED), or current participation in a Running Start Program and in senior year of high school curriculum (including home-based education). Must be at least 17 years of age at time of hire. Must be currently enrolled in a bona fide education program (in an accredited college or university), including some prerequisite coursework toward and engineering degree.  Valid documentation is required at hire and subsequent quarter/semester enrollments.  Must be earning a minimum of 10 credits for each applicable quarter/semester and must maintain a minimum overall grade point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale.

Must meet the District’s qualifications for Student employment at all times.  Students will be terminated when no longer enrolled in a bona fide education program, including immediately upon graduation.

LICENSE REQUIREMENTS

Some engineering student positions require a valid driver's license (verified upon hire) and a valid Washington State driver's license within 30 days of employment. (Noted under Job Purpose.) Students under 18 may not drive more than 20% of any work week.

Students under the age of 18 must comply with State of Washington Department of Labor and Industries Employment Standards (Driving by Minors – RCW 49.12 Administrative Policy ES.C.4.3), WAC 296-125-030, and Washington State Department of Licensing intermediate license laws for teen drivers when driving while conducting business on behalf of the District.
