Chelan County PUD
1961 – John F. Kennedy becomes president; the Beatles are discovered in Liverpool; “West Side Story” hits the big screen; and Rocky Reach Dam starts pumping electrons into Chelan County, as construction is complete on the $273.1-million project.
In 2011, Rocky Reach will celebrate its 50th birthday and the dam’s Visitor Center opens at 9 a.m. on Saturday, March 12, to kick off the celebration. The Visitor Center offers free tours of the powerhouse along with the Museum of the Columbia, plus art displays, a theater and fish viewing.
A highlight of the celebration will be a community birthday party for Rocky Reach at the dam on the evening of June 30. The event will include speakers, powerhouse tours, and a chance to sign a memorial display to be mounted in the powerhouse for future generations. In addition, hard-hat tours, which offer a look at parts of the dam not usually open to the public, will be offered for the community the week of June 30.
This year is also Chelan County PUD’s 75th anniversary.
More than 53,000 people visited Rocky Reach Dam last year. In the theater, they could “Experience Chelan County” by watching a video that takes viewers on a trip up the Columbia River, with historical stops at Rock Island, Rocky Reach and Chelan dams. It also explains how power gets from a dam to your light switch and chronicles the PUD’s commitment to fish protection and the environment.
Here are some other things to do and see at Rocky Reach Visitor Center and the Museum of the Columbia:
