Chelan County PUD
News Release
8/2/2010
Chelan County PUD’s Sustainable Natural Alternative Power (SNAP) program is looking to expand its circle of community supporters.
In August, the first 100 customers who sign up to be new SNAP supporters by agreeing to pay at least $2.50 a month for six months will receive a free set of six solar yard lights as a thank you for helping the program grow. The additional amount will be added to their monthly power bills.
SNAP connects customers who want to produce solar and wind power with other local customers who want to support the development of new, renewable energy as a complement to the clean, renewable hydropower produced at the PUD’s three dams. When you contribute to SNAP, you essentially are buying power generated by local solar, wind and small hydropower producers for the PUD’s electrical grid. The money you contribute is divided among the SNAP producers; that’s how they’re paid for the energy they produce. They also receive a nominal amount from the PUD (75 percent of the off-peak wholesale power rate).
Your purchase supports school and community programs as well as the development of new energy resources in Chelan County and goes directly to the producers. The PUD does not keep any of the funds designated by customers for SNAP.
SNAP producers include 28 schools, seven nonprofit organizations and eight private producers. There are 41 solar arrays, two wind installations and one small hydro plant, which produced 116,709 kilowatt hours of electricity last year.
Supplies of the solar yard lights are limited so sign up now to “Get the glow: Help SNAP grow.” Chelan PUD customers can sign up online or, to receive the yard lights, stop by PUD offices in Wenatchee, Chelan or Leavenworth.
