Chelan PUD fills top Energy Resources job with existing staff

Gregg Carrington, director of the Natural Resources Division, is taking on an additional role at Chelan County PUD – managing director of Energy Resources. Carrington, who joined the PUD in 1997 to lead the relicensing efforts for Lake Chelan and Rocky Reach hydro projects, will continue his duties with Natural Resources and, as of June 1, will also direct the energy planning and trading activities of the District.
He will be responsible for optimizing value of existing energy resources and developing new generation and products while keeping loads and resources in balance for local customers. Carrington will be combining his skills in developing new hydropower with his experience working on PUD environmental programs and products.
The District's three hydropower facilities generate more energy than PUD customers need. The PUD’s Energy Marketing Group sells its excess power, helping keep customer rates second lowest in the nation.
Despite excess power supply, the PUD faces a difficult situation this year because the sluggish economy has reduced revenues from the sale of surplus power – along with having low snowpack. Carrington’s expanded role means the PUD saves the cost of hiring another top level employee, and Carrington’s environmental background gives him a unique perspective to maximize the value of the PUD’s power sales.
“We want to make sure we’re getting the most out of our resources,” said PUD General Manager Rich Riazzi. “Carrington will look for ways to create value for customers, reduce risks and maximize environmental benefits.”
The combination of duties also shows the PUD’s continued emphasis on environmental awareness when it comes to power development. Riazzi said adding the responsibility to Carrington’s job description is part of the PUD’s ongoing commitment to be lean and save money in the budget where appropriate.
