PUD commissioners share philosophies on cost of service

A study shows that almost all Chelan County PUD customers are paying less than it costs to provide the services they receive. Commissioners are deciding if they want to close the gap between the costs and the revenues and if they want to use rate increases, rate design or a combination of both.

At a June 2 public meeting, commissioners took their first public comment on the study, which takes a close look at what it costs to deliver electric, water and sewer service to customers and what may be needed to keep Chelan County PUD financially healthy through 2012. Commissioners this week said they also want to discuss what will happen when existing long-term power contracts come to an end in 2012 and consider what the financial situation of the utility will be at that time.

Public comment is welcome at board meetings, by e-mail at board2@chelanpud.org and by phone at 661-4212.

Due to spring runoff and lake elevation, water is spilling into the Chelan Gorge to manage the level. Spill started Friday, June 6.

Steep drops and rugged terrain make the gorge dangerous, and people are warned to stay out.

Three file for PUD commission seats

Three candidates filed for election to become Chelan County PUD commissioner last week. Incumbent Norm Gutzwiler will run unopposed for re-election to his District 1 seat (6-year term).

Incumbent Werner Janssen filed for re-election to his At-Large District A seat (4-year term) and faces Carnan Bergren of Peshastin. Since no more than two candidates filed for any one spot, the election will be decided in November. There will be no PUD races in the primary.
