Dock permit proposal to be heard May 12

Chelan County PUD
News Release
4/28/2008

Following more discussion on the policy allowing permits for private docks over PUD-owned land on Lake Chelan and the Rocky Reach Reservoir, commissioners asked staff to present a final proposal for a decision on May 12.

Commissioners reviewed options from staff and listened to comments from five community members on Monday. They also agreed to exempt the Water Street area in Chelan from the policy until the city determines its interest in a possible “micro” park there.

Commissioners asked staff to prepare a resolution that would:

  • Continue to issue permits for private docks on PUD-owned land above and below the water;
  • Issue permits for at least 20 years;
  • Charge market rates for permits;
  • Continue the 90-day cancellation provision, but add that it would be for District “need.”
PUD readies for new meter system

A team working on installation of a system that will automatically read electric meters told PUD commissioners they are evaluating technology to send and receive signals and are developing a request for proposals from firms which would provide and install the equipment.

John Stoll, Customer Service director, also discussed plans to help meter readers find other jobs at the PUD during the transition and the need for adding temporary contract meter readers until installation of the automated metering system (AMS) is complete in three to five years. The PUD has already installed automated meters for water customers.

Customers served by the Squilchuck Substation, south and west of Wenatchee, will be the first to be served by the electric AMS. It was chosen because of the variety of terrain, types of service and age of equipment in that part of the PUD system. Work there could begin later this year. Other areas will be added after performance at Squilchuck is reviewed.

Total project cost is estimated at $15 million.

In other business, commissioners:

  • Scheduled a public meeting at 5:30 p.m. on June 5 at the Confluence Technology Center in Wenatchee to discuss how rates are set and what goes into determining the cost of service for different types of customers.
