Photo for Is global warming a significant issue for us in Chelan County? item. Readers who believe global warming is a significant issue in Chelan County were a slight majority of those responding to our last Lightly newsletter poll.

Fifty-four percent answered “yes” to the question, “Is global warming a significant issue for us in Chelan County? Forty-six percent voted “no.” Forty-eight readers participated.

On the “yes” side, comments included these:
 “We'd like to think that we're our own world here in Chelan County, but we're not. We should do our part to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, preserve water, recycle, etc.”
 “Global warming should take priority in national politics.”
 “It's significant for everyone -- especially those of us from First World countries, and especially from the U.S., who have a Sasquatch-sized carbon footprint.”

Some of the comments from the “no” voters:
 “Have you been outside this winter?  Let's drop this political sham and get on to some real issues.”
 “I think so-called "global warming" is just a hyped up political term.  I think the world has been changing since it started, warming, cooling, whatever was natural.  I think that humans and animals and plants have evolved to go along with whatever climate changes have occurred.  And we will continue to evolve and change as needed, until the world doesn't exist anymore.”
 “I do believe this is an issue of importance to Chelan County, but I believe it is not as significant as other issues.”
