Daytime closures on Western Avenue needed for water work

Chelan County PUD
News Release
3/18/2008

Improvements to water line connections for Chelan County PUD customers along Western Avenue will require closing the road between Fifth and Washington streets on weekdays from March 31- April 18.

Traffic will be detoured to Miller Street from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. weekdays. Western Avenue residents will be able to reach their homes from Orchard Street during work hours. The street will be open on nights and weekends during the project.

“We recognize that Western Avenue is a busy street and appreciate the patience of drivers who will face detours during the work,” said Bill Zacher, PUD water superintendent. “Being able to work with the street closed will help us finish faster, and by starting the project during spring break we hope it will be easier on parents and students trying to reach the schools nearby.”

The work will connect PUD water customers on the west side of Western Avenue to a newer water pipe on the east side of the road. Project cost is about $45,000. The existing pipe on the west side of the road is more than 40 years old, is deteriorating and has had problems with leaks, Zacher said.

The PUD is coordinating the street closure with the city of Wenatchee and contacting businesses, agencies and residents along Western Avenue to let them know. Zacher has also made arrangements to have that section of Western Avenue swept on April 11, to be ready for the bike leg of the annual Ridge to River Relay on April 12.

Updates on the work and alerts about other traffic delays expected for utility work during the construction season are posted on the PUD’s Web site, http://www.chelanpud.org/ under “outages and alerts.”
