PUD first hydropower in Chicago Climate Exchange

The Chicago Climate Exchange (CCX) has approved a portion of the hydropower generated at Chelan County PUD’s Rocky Reach Dam to be traded to offset greenhouse gas emissions from other sources.

Approximately 1.75 million additional megawatt hours generated at the dam as a result of operational and equipment efficiency improvements since 2003 are eligible to be traded as carbon offset credits, estimated to be worth from $1.5 million to $3 million at recent prices. Learn more.

Extended contracts focus on fish

PUD commissioners have authorized several contracts to continue fish protection efforts and to support improvements for the District’s hatcheries. The work is being done as part of the Habitat Conservation Plans, which commit the PUD to have no net impact on migrating salmon and steelhead from hydro operations through a combination of passage, habitat and hatchery measures.

Among the possibilities to be studied by experts at PR Aqua of Nanaimo, B.C., and the Conservation Fund of Sheperdstown, W.Va., is reducing some uses of water at hatcheries through recycling, in some cases by as much as 70 percent. Commissioners extended a contract with PR Aqua for four years for $600,000 and approved a new four-year agreement with the Conservation Fund for $400,000.

Reducing pikeminnow in the Columbia River that feed on young salmon and steelhead is another focus. Click here to learn more.
