Agency can help keep the heat on

Photo for Agency can help keep the heat on item. The Chelan-Douglas Community Action Council receives federal funds each year to help low-income residents pay heating bills. Bob Soule, Community Action director, reports that his agency has had ample funds to help get customers through winter 2007-08.

The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program is an entitlement program, Soule explained, meaning anyone who meets income guidelines and uses electric, gas, oil or other heat is eligible. That contrasts with the PUD’s Helping Hand program, where customer donations are used to close the gaps when customers get behind in their bills.

Both programs are administered by Community Action, located at 620 Lewis Street, Wenatchee. The phone number is (509) 662-6156.
