New Chelan trails discussed
Chelan County PUD
News Release
10/8/2007
In business on Monday, commissioners:
- Reviewed plans for building a 1.16-mile trail to the Chelan River just below the Chelan Dam, and a 0.38-mile connection to it from the Riverwalk Loop Trail. The new trails are required by the PUD’s 50-year license to operate the dam granted in November 2006. The plans now go to federal regulators for approval, and construction must start within a year of approval. Cost to build the longer, but unpaved, trail is $225,000-$250,000. Construction of the shorter, but paved and built for access by all, trail is estimated at $340,000-$500,000. The PUD is also required to operate and maintain the trails over the life of the license, estimated at $14,000 a year.
- Noted national Public Power Week, Oct. 7-13. The PUD is recognizing the completion of the $185 million, 11-year Rocky Reach powerhouse modernization project and offering coffee and cookies to customers who stop by PUD offices and the Rocky Reach Dam Visitor Center this week.
- Declared 73 pieces of used computer equipment surplus to District needs and authorized its sale at a public auction from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Oct. 13, in the Wenatchee PUD Auditorium.
- Signed a 10-year agreement with the Yakama Nation to meet the PUD’s obligation under its Habitat Conservation Plans to protect coho salmon. The PUD will provide $3.06 million for the tribe’s Coho hatchery operations and for monitoring and evaluation.
- Received an update on an effort with other PUDs and Local 77 of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) to revise the state law that limits the size of projects on which PUD crews are allowed to work. The limit, last updated in 1990, is at $50,000 for materials. Based on a 3 ½-percent inflation rate, the PUDs and IBEW are proposing a materials limit of $200,000. Chelan, Douglas, Grant, Kittitas and Okanogan PUDs and IBEW sent a letter supporting the change to local state legislators.
