Chelan power outage extended

Chelan County PUD
News Release
9/26/2007

A power outage affecting an estimated 100 customers near Chelan in an area north of Howard Flats to Azwell Road will be extended into Thursday due to tougher-than-expected conditions encountered Wednesday as crews made repairs to damaged power poles.

A brush fire that swept through the area Tuesday afternoon and evening damaged at least eight power poles along Highway 97 and in rough, rocky terrain on the hillsides above the highway. PUD crews replaced three poles during the night and worked on five more Wednesday. Fresh crews were expected to take over about 4 p.m. Wednesday and work through the night to restore power as quickly as possible Thursday.

PUD supervisors said it was harder than expected to place new poles in some of the rocky terrain. Several burned poles also fell with power lines attached on the ground, making the work take longer than expected. Crews are trying to keep the power line connected but de-energized as poles are replaced.

Areas affected by the outage include Antoine Creek, Washington Creek and the general area north of Howard Flats to Azwell Road.
