PUD adopts water use efficiency plan

Chelan County PUD
News Release
7/9/2007

Commissioners Monday adopted a plan to comply with a state water-use efficiency rule, the Municipal Water Supply Efficiency Requirements Act of 2003.

The efficiency rule requires that water providers meet certain conservation standards. Chelan County PUD was required to approve a plan for its Wenatchee-area water system this year. The PUD’s smaller water systems will be addressed next year.

The plan adopted Monday will supplement ongoing PUD water conservation efforts that will count under the new state law, including the utility’s use of tiered rates, automated water meters and water conservation programs like Xeriscape, or low-water-use landscaping. The PUD also offers low-interest loans for improvements to irrigation systems.

As well as encouraging customers to conserve water and stop leaks, the PUD has set a goal to reduce water distribution system leaks from 15.2 percent to less than 12.5 percent by 2013. The utility will also try to reduce third-tier consumption by 5 percent by the same year. Third-tier water customers use more than 10,000 gallons of water monthly.

Water customers are encouraged to visit the PUD’s water conservation Web page for tips on saving water and money.
