It's hot! Here are some cool tips for saving energy
Chelan County PUD
News Release
7/5/2007
Chelan County PUD has adequate power supply to meet increased demand as temperatures rise this summer. Water supply for hydro generation is normal this year.
We also want to help customers use energy wisely and be prepared in case of a power outage from lightning storms or wildfires.
Using energy wisely can help you save money and stay comfortable. Here are some suggestions on how to stay cool and save energy this summer:
- Set your air conditioner thermostat as high as comfortably possible. The less difference between the indoor and outdoor temperatures, the lower your overall cooling bill will be.
- Don't set your thermostat at a colder setting than normal when you turn on your air conditioner. It won't cool your home any faster and could result in excessive cooling and, therefore, unnecessary expense.
- Switch to energy-saving compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs and add motion detectors to outside lighting. CFL bulbs use about two-thirds less energy than incandescent bulbs and last many times longer.
- Consider using an interior fan in conjunction with your window air conditioner to help spread the cooled air through your home without greatly increasing your power use.
- Don't place lamps or TVs near your air-conditioning thermostat. The thermostat senses heat from these appliances, which can cause the air conditioner to run longer than necessary.
- Close the curtains in rooms that receive afternoon sun, particularly if it's the room containing your cooling thermostat. With the curtains open, the thermostat senses the heat coming through the window, causing your air conditioner to run longer and often causing other rooms to be uncomfortably cool.
- Clean or change your air conditioner filter once a month or as needed. It's also a good idea to have a qualified heating and cooling contractor service your air conditioner annually to assure peak efficiency. Make sure to have your ductwork inspected for leaks and have the refrigerant charge checked.
Summer is the time for lightning strikes and wildfires. You can report a power problem or get updates if there is an outage by calling the PUD’s outage information line at 1-877-PUD-8123 (1-877-783-8123).
No matter the time of year, these ideas can help you prepare for a power outage:
- Keep flashlights, battery-powered radios, extra batteries, canned and dried foods and bottled water on hand.
- Avoid opening the refrigerator or freezer. Food should stay fresh for at least 24 hours if the door is seldom opened.
- Stay away from fallen trees or power lines.
- Disconnect TVs, computers and all electric equipment to prevent possible damage when power is restored.
- Make sure you know how to open your automatic garage door by hand.
- Have a cell phone or corded phone. Cordless phones don’t work during a power outage.
- Turn off your air conditioner, appliances and all but a few lights. Wait at least 10 minutes after power is restored before turning these items on. That reduces strain on the electric system as it picks up waiting load and can help prevent a much longer outage.
