Monitor water project approved

PUD commissioners this week approved forming a local utility district to finance construction of a water system for Monitor and the surrounding area.
The board voted 3-1 in favor of the $6.5 million project, with the understanding that the District will absorb up to $800,000 in internal costs if an expected $600,000 in additional grant funding is not received.
Commissioner Ann Congdon, who supports the project, voted no because of staff concern that the caveat on internal costs might put grant funding at risk. Commissioner Werner Janssen abstained.
Nearly 100 community members from Monitor attended the hearing Monday. More than 20 people spoke.

PUD considering Chicago Climate Exchange role
As part of the continuing effort to have hydropower recognized as a renewable energy source, PUD staff is researching possible involvement as a provider of renewable energy in the Chicago Climate Exchange.
The exchange, founded in 2003, puts together entities voluntarily seeking to reduce their carbon emissions with others that may have renewable energy available to offset those emissions.

Using water wisely
A growing population, agriculture, industry, and the importance of conserving water for fish have placed an increasing demand on Washington state’s water resources. To help meet these growing needs, the state Legislature passed the Municipal Water Supply - Efficiency Requirements Act of 2003, better known as the Municipal Water Law. The law gives municipal water suppliers, like Chelan County PUD, certain benefits and obligations. One of the obligations is to comply with the water use efficiency rule.
