Hearing on Monitor water project set for June 25
Chelan County PUD
News Release
5/7/2007
PUD commissioners Monday took the next step in considering whether to extend water service to Monitor by setting a public hearing at 7 p.m. on June 25 in the PUD Auditorium in Wenatchee.
At the hearing community members can ask questions and offer opinions on forming a local utility district (LUD) to finance construction of a water system. The LUD would serve about 225 customers and cover about 1,400 acres in and around Monitor.
At Monday’s PUD meeting, Monitor Community Council members presented petitions asking the PUD to form an LUD for the project signed by 61 percent of the property owners in the proposed district. The signatures represent 76 percent of the land that would be included.
Cost to build the water system is estimated at $6.5 million, with grants covering 62 percent of the cost and government loans covering 38 percent. If the LUD is approved, plans call for construction to start in November and take about a year to complete.
Efforts to improve the drinking water supply for Monitor, west of Wenatchee, date back to 1995. The work that culminated in Monday’s LUD request started in 2005.
In other business, commissioners:
- Declared the PUD’s intent to exchange land with the city of Wenatchee that is needed for the riverfront development project. Central to the exchange is the PUD trading the former Worthern Substation site at the foot of Fifth Street to the city for land next to Lowe’s on Walla Walla Avenue for a new PUD substation.
- Accepted an invitation to meet with Chelan County commissioners on May 22 to discuss issues of joint concern. PUD commissioners set a special meeting for 1-3 p.m. in the county commission chambers at the Courthouse, 350 Orondo Ave., in Wenatchee.
- Heard an update on changes to 55 of the PUD’s 209 meter-reading routes that will be reflected this month on customer bills. Automated meter reading technology added to water meters has allowed consolidation of some water and electric meter-reading routes. As a result, billing periods may be longer or shorter than normal in May. Customers will also see a new line on their bill for a surcharge, but there is no surcharge at this time.

PUD commissioners adjourned Monday’s meeting and continued it to noon on Tuesday, May 8, to attend the annual PUD retiree lunch at the Wenatchee Center.
PUD commissioners will hold a special meeting at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, May 9, in the boardroom at 327 N. Wenatchee Ave., to discuss water issues as part of strategic planning.
PUD commissioners set a special meeting for noon to 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 10, at the Icicle Inn, 505 State Highway 2, to attend the Leavenworth Customer Partnership Group meeting. Commissioners have set eight more special meetings for May through July to attend customer partnership group meetings.
The next regular meeting of the PUD commission is at 1 p.m. on Monday, May 14, in the boardroom at 327 N. Wenatchee Ave.
Most PUD commission meetings are recorded, and a link to the audio is available on the PUD’s home page at www.chelanpud.org.
