Chelan County PUD
News Release
3/28/2005
Representatives of a group of community members and a group of PUD employees met with commissioners Monday to present their versions of new mission and vision statements for Chelan County PUD.
PUD commissioners plan to update the District’s guiding statements at their annual strategic planning retreat next month.
Meetings were held with 11 members of the community in January and 11 PUD employees in February to get their thoughts on the PUD’s mission and vision statements.
Ron Berschauer, Wenatchee, and Bob Goedde, Chelan, reported on the mission statement for the PUD developed by community members. It states:
“It is our mission to efficiently provide low-cost, reliable power and utility services to the people of Chelan County while being good stewards of our resources.”
PUD employees Chad Paine, Jeff Mitchell and Sharon Turcotte presented the statement from their group.
“ It is our mission to provide safe, reliable utility services that will enhance the economy, quality and environment of Chelan County.”
PUD commissioners invited representatives from both groups to the retreat to take part in the final discussion of a new mission and vision statements. The retreat will start at 8:30 a.m. April 11 and April 13 in the PUD auditorium at 327 N. Wenatchee Ave.
In other business, commissioners:
- Gave Power Management authority to extend possible power sales 22 months into the future (instead of the normal 18-month limit) on a one-time basis to take advantage of high prices that may be present in the market.
- Approved spending for three fish programs in 2005. Columbia Research of Chelan will operate under a $100,000 contract to use longline fishing in the District’s pikeminnow control program through May 1 in the Rocky Reach and Rock Island reservoirs. Pikeminnow are a voracious predator of young salmon and steelhead. About 7,000 large pikeminnow have already been caught this spring. Another contract for pikeminnow control was also approved for $255,225 with the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Five crews of fishermen will use rod and reel to catch pikeminnow from May-Oct. 2005. Since 1994, 171,260 pikeminnow have been caught. For another program, Bioanalysts of Eagle, Idaho, was hired to monitor the bull trout management plan required under the Habitat Conservation Plans for Rocky Reach and Rock Island for 2005-2009 at a cost not to exceed $1.07 million.
- Received an update from Mark Wiser, Energy Services supervisor, on how the District is responding to concerns about the drought and its effect on power prices this summer. Water and energy conservation programs are already in place, and a meeting has been held with other local water suppliers and irrigators. Wiser said the PUD will continue to emphasize wise use of resources and offer support to other agencies.
