Fish viewing hits peak at Rocky Reach

Chelan County PUD
News Release
7/7/2005

Right now is a good time to look a salmon in the eye at Rocky Reach Dam.

A large run of summer chinook salmon is now passing the dam, offering exceptional fish viewing at Rocky Reach Visitor Center.

“Viewing is excellent right now as up to 1,600 adult chinook per day have been passing Rocky Reach,” said Steve Hemstrom, Chelan County PUD Fishery Biologist. “It will be good throughout July, with the peak sometime during the first and second week of the month.”

While fish runs are always unpredictable, good fish viewing should continue at Rocky Reach for about two months. Summer and fall chinook will be heaviest for the next month. There will also be some sockeye salmon during July and steelhead during August.

The Visitor Center is open from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. every day through Thanksgiving.
