PUD earns national award
Chelan County PUD was recognized this week for its outstanding environmental stewardship efforts as part of the ninth-annual “Outstanding Stewardship of America’s Rivers” report.
The report illustrates creative, collaborative, and technological solutions implemented by hydropower companies to improve water quality, enhance wildlife habitats, restore fisheries, protect endangered species, and permanently conserve land for the protection of wildlife.
The OSAR award winners were recognized Monday at an awards ceremony during the National Hydropower Association’s Annual Conference in Washington, DC.

Chelan County PUD commissioners will hold their semi-annual retreat next week on April 11 and 13 in the PUD’s auditorium.
Topics to be discussed include updates to the PUD’s mission and vision statements.

Hug a tree lately?
The power of trees will be celebrated with Arbor Day seedling tree distributions in five communities on April 13.
The Wenatchee celebration is scheduled from noon to 6 p.m. at the Riverfront Park Ice Rink. The PUD, a co-sponsor of the event, will offer tips on planting the right tree in the right place, with emphasis on how to plant correctly near power lines.
Other seedling distributions scheduled for the day are:
- Cashmere – 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Clifford’s Hardware
- Leavenworth - 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the National Fish Hatchery
- Entiat - 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at City Hall
- Orondo - 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at The Market Place
Volunteers are needed to help pack trees for distribution from 4-9 p.m. at the Wenatchee Ice Rink on Monday, April 11. High-school students and adults are welcome.
New heat pump technology proves itself
Preliminary tests of the new Cold Climate Heat Pump show significant energy savings over standard air source heat pumps. But the super-efficient heat pumps are not yet available to customers.
Chelan County PUD purchased a Cold Climate Heat Pump last year for testing purposes. The unit was installed at Wenatchee Valley College and tested against a conventional heat pump this past winter. The PUD was the first utility west of the Mississippi to install and test the Cold Climate Heat Pump, which was reported to reduce heating costs by 40 percent over standard air-source heat pumps.
