Work is under way on the new high-voltage transmission line that will carry electricity from the Rocky Reach Dam Switchyard over Burch Mountain to the Andrew York/Monitor Switchyard on Easy Street, northwest of Wenatchee.
The new line is being built to increase reliability on Chelan County PUD’s electric system and to meet expected growth in power demand over the next 20 years.

PUD commissioners have authorized a $924,000 contract with Badger Meter, Inc. of Milwaukee, Wis., to supply and install an automatic meter reading, or AMR, system for the PUD’s water system this year.
The PUD serves over five thousand water customers, whose meters are read monthly between March and November. In other months, water bills are estimated.
The AMR system would eliminate estimates on water meters, helping customers budget and detect leaks on their system more easily. It will also allow PUD employees to read meters from their vehicles, lessening safety hazards that include lifting heavy vault lids and finding occasional snakes and spiders in the underground meter vaults.
Installation of an AMR system was evaluated in 2005, and $1.2 million was earmarked in the 2006 budget for the project. This system would work well with an AMR system for electric meters, which the PUD is also investigating.
See linemen from around the Northwest test their skills in competition at the Andrew York Lineman Rodeo, June 24, at Rocky Reach Dam. There are team and apprentice lineman challenges, plus activities for the whole family.
All proceeds go to the Andrew York Memorial Scholarship Fund. Andrew York was a PUD lineman who was killed by a drunken driver who crashed into a PUD work site in 2000.
Chelan County PUD's fiber-optic network is now the largest open-access, fiber-to-the-premises network in Washington state. Fiber-optic telecommunications services are available to more than 15,000 Chelan County homes, businesses, schools, hospitals and government offices.
The fiber network showcases public and private entities working together to construct and provide advanced broadband services to almost 3,000 square miles, including the communities of Leavenworth, Lake Chelan, Wenatchee and Cashmere.
